Being born on an island—be it Manhattan, Menorca, Japan, Venice, Mallorca, Ibiza or Formentera—implies a particular way of seeing the world and relating to outer space., different—neither better nor worse—from that of a continental person.

Joan Pons, born in a small town on the island of Menorca, Ferreries, that has become the mythical universe of Semblancat, Christmas night of the year 1960, has made this look insular, fruitfully fused with the urban world, his literary style. Through him he has built a work that has been translated into French, to Russian and Spanish, among other languages.

His career has earned him awards such as the Ciutat d'Alzira, the Joaquim Ruyra or the Joan Ramis i Ramis; literary creation scholarships from the Generalitat of Catalonia, of Barcelona City Council and UNESCO, as well as private entities such as the Catalan Encyclopedia. Además, He has managed to be part of national and international anthologies thanks to his poetry. (The island of dead trees), his stories (Don't believe what they say about me) and his novels (Red-beard).

This last work was brought to the stage by the company La Trup, directed by Sergi Marí, with great critical and public success. For some years now he has been publishing a series of articles in the press under the title Pedraules —"words are the stones of writers", according to the document—, that have had a wide impact on the island of Menorca and on social networks around the world.

in March 2026 publishes the book of stories “Otel·lo to Formentera” with the Ibizan label Edicions Aïllades.
