CENTENARY OF THE 'ASSOCIATION FOR THE CULTURE OF MALLORCA'

On the occasion of the centenary of the foundation of the 'Association for the Culture of Mallorca', the following days 29 y 31 March and 5 events will take place in April to celebrate this date.

The events that will be carried out will serve to celebrate the centenary of the founding of this association, as well as to remember their work and importance.

The first act will be held on Wednesday 29 of March and will consist of a round table entitled 'One hundred years of the Association for the Culture of Mallorca (1923-1936)’. Bartomeu Carrió will participate in it, Arnau Company and Sebastià Serra. The event will take place in Can Alcover at 19 horas.

Then, El 31 March the placement of a commemorative plaza will take place, which will be located on Bisbe Perelló Street, número 2. Joan Miralles will participate in the event, Llorenç Carrió and Antoni Marimon.

'Association for the Culture of Mallorca': importance and legacy

'Associació per la Cultura de Mallorca' was an entity founded in Mallorca in 1923 with the aim of uniting the different Majorcan trends. Composed of people from various fields, worked to promote and extend Mallorcan culture.

The 'Association', although it had an inevitable political character due to its function, was established outside of political parties. This is explained by its desire to become a broad platform for the defense of Majorcanism., for which he intended to unite the maximum number of people possible.

This platform, in which nationalists and regionalists agreed, Its objective was to spread and promote the Catalan language as support for the native culture of the island.. in other words, It aimed to promote knowledge of one's own values ​​among the population through the promotion of culture.. For this, language courses were organized, art and archeology, conference on various topics, commemorative and tribute events, and even written publications.

With the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, the 'Association for the Culture of Mallorca', just like all entities defending culture in the Catalan language, suffered due to repression. Nonetheless, the annual publication was maintained The Almanac of Letters y, a partir de 1929, the monthly magazine Our land. After the end of this dictatorship, the association resumed activities, participating in the draft of the statute of autonomy during the 2nd. Republic.
