I have not found Adriene Rich's poem in which is the verse that Laura chose for the title of her novel. But on the way, how usually happens, I have come across fascinating surprises like this excerpt from Twenty One Love Poems, by the poet Adriene Rich. Thank you Laura for introducing us to Adriene!

Twenty One Love Poems by Adriene Rich

i

“All over this town, where screens flicker

with pornography, with sci-fi vampires,

With victimized mercenaries bending under the whip,

we also have to walk ... as simple as walking

between the wet trash and the cruelties of our own neighborhoods

that appear on the cover of newspapers.

We need to understand our lives as inseparable

of those stale dreams, those metal pops, those misfortunes

And the red begonia gleaming dangerously

on the balcony of a six-story building,

Or of the leggy young girls playing ball

in the high school yard.

Nobody imagined us. We want to live like trees,

bananas glistening in the sulfuric air

stained with scars, but blooming with exuberance,

our animal passion planted in the city.

II

I wake up in your bed. I know that I was dreaming.

Long before, the alarm separated us,

you were at your desk for hours. I know what i dreamed:

our poet friend enters my room

where I was writing for days,

drafts, carbon paper, poems scattered everywhere,

and I want to show you a poem

what is the poem of my life. Pero vacilo

and awake. You kissed my hair

to wake me up. I dreamed that you were a poem,

I tell him, a poem that I wanted to show someone ...

and I laugh and fall asleep again

with the desire to show you to everyone I love,

of moving together openly

under the force of gravity, that is not easy,

that drags the grass like feathers a long way to the air we breathe”.
