DOWNED PLANES AND ARTILLERY IN IBIZA IN THE 20TH CENTURY

REVIEW

Cover of the book 'Artillery in the 20th century and planes that fell in the Pitiüses during the Second World War'

The book 'Artillery in the 20th stamp and planes fallen in the Pitiüses during the Second World War' (Editions Aïaldes), BY PERE VILÀS, result essential to study a historical period that we have deliberately preferred to forget.

The end of the Civil War did not bring peace, but the victory: the “triumphant years” of the dictatorship. It was not an easy stage. The Franco regime was immediately integrated into the orbit of the Third Reich while maintaining a neutrality that was more apparent than real.. Its leaders were confident that the world war would end up favoring their interests..

The survivors of the conflict had to publicly show maximum support for the cause of the Germans and their “Habitat”. Only after the Nazi defeat did they begin—without too much haste—a rapprochement with the victors., that would culminate with the pacts of 1953.

The book offers a solid and well-documented statement of facts. The military authorities fortified, as far as possible, strategic points to defend against an eventual invasion. The news of the free transfer of land in times of extreme need is especially impactful, when every inch of arable land was valuable for obtaining any food.

If we extrapolate these data to the country as a whole, It is understood to what extent the international situation forced the Franco regime to prioritize defense against possible invasions., both from the Allies and from the “friends” themselves who had supported the uprising.

The book also has an obvious use as a field guide, ideal for organizing visits to the historical places it describes. Photos and maps offer a very clear view of your location. Naturally, Ibiza scholars are the ones who will be most interested in reading and commenting on it.
