Cabe destacar los cuentos Montevideanos (1959), La muerte y otras sorpresas (1968), Primavera con una esquina rota (1991), Buzón del tiempo (1999) y El porvenir de mi pasado (2003); las novelas The Truce (1960), Thanks for the fire (1965) y El cumpleaños de Juan Ángel (1971); los libros de poesía Inventario (1963), Aras de sueño (1967), Inventario 70 (1970), Inventario 1982 (1982), Preguntas al azar (1986, algunos poemas del que Joan Manuel Serrat música y grabó en el disco El Sur también existe,1985), Contra los puentes levadizos (1998), Defensa propia (2004), Existo todavía (2004) y Testigo de uno mismo (2008), y los ensayos The country of the straw tail (1960), Letters from the mestizo continent (1967), emergency letters (1973), Reality and the word (1991), Memory and Hope (2004), entre otros.
He also cultivated theater (Pedro and the captain, 1997) and contributed to numerous periodicals. His prolific literary production included more than 80 books, many of which were translated into 20 Languages.
Won, entre otros, the Reina Sofía Prize for Ibero-American Poetry (1999), the Ibero-American José Martí award (2001), the Menéndez Pelayo International Prize and received the Francisco de Miranda Decoration from the Venezuelan government. (2007). He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of the Republic of Uruguay (2004).
