INTERVIEW WITH JOSÉ M: In the port of Ibiza there is a tribute to the corsairs. To what extent are they important to the local culture?
José M. Prats Marí: in Ibiza, to talk about the sea is to talk about corsairs. The best known are those of the 18th century due to the chronicles, but it is very possible that its peak was during the Middle Ages, with the arrival of the Almoravids. There were Muslims and Ibizans and it coincided with the reigns of taifas.
P: en ‘BATTLESHIP Bombardment DEUTSCHLAND‘ you investigated an event from the 20th century. Now you explain about events of the 18th century. Does the way of studying and writing change a lot?
JMPM: The dynamics are more or less the same: what changes are the sources. In the 20th century we have the written press and you can go to the newspaper archives. To write about the 18th century you have to rely on historians and historical archives.
P: Did your collaboration on the History Channel series help you?, 'Pirates in the Balearic Islands’ to write the book?
JMPM: Yes. The Naval Museum sent me to Palma to act as an advisor, which forced me to study almost all the books that were in Ibiza about privateers. All the work of Pere Vilàs Gil from the Historical Archive of Ibiza and the Historical Archive of the Navy also helped me..
P: the day 11 In May you will present the book at the Naval Museum of Madrid. What can you tell us??
JMPM: Last year we already presented 'The Bombing of the Battleship Deutschland' there. This year, as I have investigated in the Naval Museum, The possibility of presenting in your conference room has been opened to me.
