Greece, Rome ... Ibiza

Myth, adolescence and a bridge between worlds: The 6th Classical Culture Literary Contest Joana Maria Pol i Fiol

By j. P. Quiroz Rivera

to literature, Even in their earliest forms, It is always a conversation between times. El VI Literary Contest of Classical Culture Joana Maria Pol i Fiol, Organized by the IES Santa Maria Library Commission in Ibiza and published by isolated editions, It is a discreet but admirable example of how the legacy of Greece and Rome continues to illuminate the imagination of new generations of students.

NEXT TENTH ANNIVERSARY AGENDA, Born as a tribute to Professor Joana Maria Pol i Fiol—a teacher who dedicated her life to the dissemination of classical culture in Ibiza—, reaches its sixth edition, now becoming a small annual rite that, beyond the contest, works as an exercise in cultural memory. Those of us who were lucky enough to have her as a teacher know well about her dedication., of his love for the Greco-Latin world and, above all, of your personal warmth, in his own way of turning each explanation into a shared journey to other times and other languages.

The compilation of winning stories of this edition shows, One more time, the creative potential of the island's Secondary and Baccalaureate students. The structure of the book responds to the organization by categories: 1º and 2º of ESO, 3º and 4º of ESO, and Baccalaureate, each one with its trio of award-winning stories. The set constitutes a narrative kaleidoscope where mythology coexists., the epic, philosophical reflection and, no less important, emotional codes and their own myths of adolescence.

The story that opens the volume, The battle for the future: last cry to Olympus, by Anyela Ioana Ciobanu, It is an exercise in mythical rereading. Ciobanu manages to revitalize Olympus with a language that, without losing school simplicity, succeeds in combining action and values.

In the same category stands out The wings of curiosity, by Rocío Areco Aguayo, who opts for a more philosophical approach, almost a little fable about knowledge and doubt, while Élatis and the dagger of Artemis, by Elisa Roig-Francolí, recovers the pulse of the classic heroic narrative, full of gods, magical objects and moral dilemmas.

The 3rd and 4th ESO section presents an evident leap in narrative maturity. The arrows of the sea, by Sofia Natalia Torres Ferrer, traces a story with a lyrical and contemplative tone, with a command of language that surprises with its capacity for suggestion. The Christmas dinner, by Arnau Porcell Bueno, instead, introduces a more realistic and demanding tone, where the reference to the classical world functions as an emotional backdrop rather than as an explicit protagonist.

The story The love of music, by Carla León Lloria, closes this section with a story that links artistic passion with an emotional journey, and that evokes, in its simplicity, certain adolescent melancholy.

EDICIONS AÏLLADESThe Baccalaureate category marks the culmination of the volume. aquí, The winning stories present a higher level of formal and thematic ambition. Retirement, by Claudia Sofía Planells Cabrales, addresses the end of the life cycle of the gods with an ironic and almost disenchanted look, as if the author wanted to explore a twilight of myths. en Thrasos, by Alexia Maria Torres Ribas, there is a serious attempt at historical and linguistic recreation.

By last, Heroida the Hypocrite, by Alejandro Alcalá Rodríguez, dares with the dramatic tone.

The prologue of the book, drafted by the Library Commission, points out something fundamental: that even in times of pandemics, of artificial intelligence and an educational system increasingly focused on immediacy, the desire to tell stories remains intact. That statement is not commonplace.. What we find here, on these pages, It is tangible proof that the classical world continues to be a refuge, a source and, above all, a horizon that allows young people to narrate their fears, your wishes and your questions.

En este sentido, El VI Literary Competition of Classic CultureA It's not just a school competition: It is a small pedagogical miracle, an antidote to cultural trivialization and a window that shows that myths are still alive, waiting to be rewritten by new hands.
